 BASKETBALL RULES

 

8 ft Basket Height: for 1st & 2nd / 3rd & 4th;
28.5 Size Ball : for 1st & 2nd / 3rd & 4th / 5th & 6th

10 ft Basket Height: for 5th & 6th / 7th & 9th
Regulation Size Ball: for 7th & 9th

All games will be played according to National Federation (High School) Rules, except as otherwise indicated bellow:

GENERAL RULES

1.   Games will start promptly on time.
If for whatever reason a game is delayed beyond the starting time, the length of the delay will be subtracted from the total playing time. A game may begin with (4) four players per side. A shortened game will be played if the team is late. Registered players may be lent to teams so that a game may be played. The team that is short players will automatically receive a loss in the standings if they play with a player not on their roster.

2.   Each team will be receive four (4) timeouts per game plus one (1) for each overtime period.

3. Team Bench:
Two (2) coaches, one (1) team parent and registered players. Coaches and team parent’s names must be on the official roster. All others must set in the spectator area. Everyone must sit on the bench at all times except for the head coach who may stand.

4. Coaches are responsible for making sure that players share playing time equally and fairly.

5. Jewelry may not be worn during games.
Players with long hair may not wear clips, pins or beads.

6. Standing privileges for the coach are lost:
If an official calls a technical foul on any coach or member of the team on the bench. This means that all coaches and players must remain seated on the bench while the ball is in play for the remainder of the game.

7. Officials are to be respected as team members of SFK and never criticized in front of the players and or spectators.
If you have any serious concerns with the officiating you may submit them in writing to the Sports Director.


1st & 2nd grade rule Modifications

1.   Game Length: Four (4) Quarters, Eight (8) minute in length with the clock stopping for free throws, timeouts and injuries.

2.   Defense: Teams may play man or zone, but may not pressure the ball above the vertical line just beyond the top of the key.

3.  Full Court Pressure: None. On a made FG or FT, defensive rebound/steal/turn over all defensive players must retreat to vertical line just beyond the top of the key.

4.   Substitutions: Only be made at the end of each (8) minute quarter.

5.   Violations: Backcourt violations, three-second lane violations and five-second violation will not be enforced.

6.   Scorekeeping: Score will not be kept in the 7 & under age division and teaching fundamentals, the rules of the game, and teamwork must be stressed by coaches officials, and parents at all the times (no score, no overtime).

7.    Free Throws: Both coaches must come on the floor and assist the referee in lining up the players from both teams. During free throws the shooter may go over the line after the ball is released. All players must wait until the ball hits the rim.


3rd & 4th Grade Rule Modifications.

1.   Game length: Four (4) Quarters, Ten (10) minutes in length with the clock stopping for free throws, timeouts, injuries, and on all whistles in the last minute of the 4th quarter and 8th quarter. The clock will also stop on all whistles in the last 10 seconds of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd periods of each half. Overtime is two (2) minutes with the clock stopping on all whistles.

2.   Substitutions: may only be made at the end of a four-minute quarter (or for injury or if a player is in foul trouble).

3.    Full Court Pressure:
After a made basket and on a defensive rebound/steal/turnover/dead ball in the backcourt all defensive players must retreat to mid-court line before applying defensive pressure. The 1st Violation of this rule will result in a warning and the ball out of bounds. A 2nd violation will be penalized with 1 FT and the ball at half court. A team that is losing during the last two minutes of the game may apply full court pressure.


5th & 6th Grade Rule Modifications.

1.   Game length: Four (4) Quarters, Twelve (12) minutes in length with the clock stopping for free throws, timeouts and injuries. minutes in length with the clock stopping for free throws, timeouts, injuries, and on all whistles in the last minute of the 4th quarter and 8th quarter. 1.   Game length: Four (4) quarters, Twelve (12) minutes in length with the clock stopping for free throws, timeouts, injuries, and on all whistles in the last minute of each quarter. Overtime is two (2) minutes with the clock stopping on all whistles.

2.   Full court pressure: A team who has a lead of 20 points or more may not apply full court pressure and must retreat to half court and play zone or man to man.

NOTE: All coaches are responsible for the CONDUCT and LANGUAGE of their players, parents, and spectators. All coaches are to emphasize fair play and sportsmanship before, during and after the game.
